Originally a pride of Persia, which was brought to Rome when the great empire conquered the world, and eventually spread across Europe throughout the succeeding centuries, the Walnut tree is more than just a tree that bears those popular nuts abundant on Christmas tables come the holiday season. They are more than just trees that play home to squirrels and other rodent-like mammals. And they are more than just a fixture in popular nursery rhymes.
The Walnut tree plays an important part in history. At the background, yes, but crucial nonetheless.
It was said the Roman ships that traveled across the world were made from the sturdy wood provided by the Walnut tree. Such legendary wood remains a useful material today, given its furniture grade quality.
Also, the farms of Persia before the country was invaded by Rome were, believe it or not, powered by this tree. Its leaves as well as the exteriors of its unripe fruits, known to be very bitter in taste, together with the brown skin of the seed, were used as potent insecticides to kill the worms that plagued the plants. These ingredients posed no harm to the plants, making them the perfect anti-agents for the unwanted pests.
In Italy during the days of yore, the Walnut tree was believed to be blessed by Diana, goddess of the hunt. The tree's majestic size and wide shade provided comfort to many hunters, Diana's children. Hence, every year, whenever festivals were held to honor Diana, the festivities were conducted under Walnuts.
Walnuts have also become the symbol for luck and prosperity at one point. In fact, many cultures still observe weddings by scattering walnuts during celebrations in honor of the bride and groom.
The Walnut tree, of course, was embraced by the American public when it began its integration in popular culture. From Alvin and the Chipmunks dedicating as song for the tree, to Christmas carols making mention of the same, to Charlie Brown and his gang setting up base on the tree house built upon its sturdy stems, to the recent Ice Age movies where a soon-to-be-extinct predecessor of the modern day squirrel desperately tried to acquire a Walnut at the expense of his life and limb, this tree crawled its way to the heart of the public. Nowadays, its name is as common as the usual staples of Christmas, given the fact that its nuts are often served during the holiday season.
